As the economy turns sour, job seekers are putting on their thinking caps and coming up with ever creative ways to get noticed in the job market. From renting billboards, to making themselves a walking resume, getting their potential bosses tipsy and even offering cash incentives, the game of employment has forever changed.
The real question is, are all these stunts and extreme job hunting strategies effective in getting the ultimate reward – The Job! Or will it damage your credibility in a way that you can never recover from even if you do get an initial interview?
One technique that has worked, I like to call the Cash Incentive Method ( with a side of Viral Marketing). One enterprising young fellow sent an email with resume and cover letter attached to everyone he knew. The catch, he offered a $150 finder’s fee to the person responsible for leading him to the position. It only took one forward of the email for him to land a job offer. Unfortunately, the streets are littered with hopeless attempts at getting noticed or initial interest that doesn’t ever go anywhere. So that leads me to believe that even if you try a little creative stuff the tried and true basics better be rock solid. Resume, Resume Cover Letter, Job Interview!
So how do other experts way in on this? A VP from Monster Worldwide believes while it IS important to stand out from the crowd, it is best to do that through conventional methods. A staffing firm polled their clients and found out 26% of advertising executives and 52% of marketing executives thought these kind of tactics were unprofessional. And these are the guys that get creative for a living, so go figure?
The one thing that ties the extreme hunter winners from the losers is still holding true to traditional methods…..one of the most important of these is the Resume Cover Letter – how would you feel if I told you it might even be more important than the resume itself!
